(Hj Fadzillah)
<<
The Teacher Education
Division (TED), in collaboration with the English Language
Teaching Centre (ELTeC), Malaysia, has implemented courses
which aim to enhance teachers’ proficiency and pedagogical
skills and training of trainers. The aims of the programme
are to further the goals of access and equity in education.
English Language teachers working in difficult contexts, especially
those teaching in rural or remote areas, where there is minimal
use of the language, need to be given additional opportunities
for professional development so that they, the teachers will
be able to give their best to their learners.
IPG Kampus Darulaman
is entrusted with conducting English Language Proficiency
Courses and the Training of Trainers for ELT. The target groups
for both courses are the primary and the secondary English
Language teachers in the state of Kedah. For the English Language
Proficiency Course, 12 cohorts of teachers will be trained
from January to November 2010. Each cohort consists of 35
course participants and they have to attend the course over
four different phases covering all the four skills of Listening,
Speaking, Reading and Writing. On the other hand, the Training
of Trainers for ELT course will be conducted in 4 cohorts
with 25 course participants for each cohort.
IPG Kampus Darulaman
has until now able to train 4 cohorts of teachers for the
English Language Proficiency Course involving 140 non-option
English Language teachers from various districts of Kedah.
The responses received from the teachers were very positive.
IPG Kampus Darulaman has also successfully conducted courses
for 2 cohorts of teachers for the Training of Trainers for
ELT Course. These courses were delivered by lecturers from
the English Language Unit with the assistance of the state
ELT trainers.
It is hoped that the
courses offered to the English Language teachers will be a
valuable complement to other forms of training that they have
received. It should create in them a readiness to change and
a desire to develop on their own professionally.
